Different iterations of the same Digimon have appeared in several series, such as Leomon and Agumon, so it will be stated which series each appears and what their journey was to put them among the others on this list.

10 Renamon

Renamon has a calm and collected nature, taking in what is happening around her before she acts. She is the partner Digimon to Rika Nonaka. Throughout the earlier parts of the series, both of them show very quiet and serious demeanors, but start to express genuine concern and fondness for those important to them.

Her story explores struggle and personal growth, however, it does not explore either as well as many other characters in the franchise would. She has still been shown to be very loyal and protective of her partner and earned a spot on this list.

9 Leomon

Leomon unleashes an attack against an enemy Digimon holding his blade

Leomon has appeared in various Digimon series, but the one this entry focuses on is from the original Digimon Adventure series. From the start, it is shown that he is an enemy of the forces of evil, but is controlled against his will to become an enemy of the protagonists.

Once freed of the control, he acts as an ally, helping them in battle and aiding them on their journey. After all, even the greatest of heroes need help from time to time. Later in the series, he would show the ability of Warp Digivolution thanks to the power of the Digivices, and would sacrifice himself to protect his allies.

8 Gatomon

Starting as an antagonist employed by the evil Digimon Myotismon, it would later be revealed that she was a partner Digimon to a Digidestined all along. She would later meet her partner, the sister to another Digidestined who would acquire the crest of light.

Her story is filled with heartache and disrepair of waiting for the one they were destined to be with but never came. While serving Myotismon, she had only one Digimon she could call a friend who genuinely cared about her, Wizardmon.

7 Wizardmon

Wizardmon starts as being seen as just another henchman for Myotismon in the original Digimon series. However, it is soon revealed that they are dedicated to the well-being and protection of Gatomon.

He aligned himself with Myotismon so that he would be able to watch over Gatomon and help guide her to a better future. In his final moments during the first series, he would sacrifice his own life to protect Gatomon and her partner by moving himself in front of an oncoming attack.

6 Wormmon

Wormmon looks shocked on the grass with big blue eyes

Wormmon is a bit of a trope used in many series, as they are the loyal but lovable and goodhearted henchman to an evil overlord. While their leader is evil, Wormmon remains good-natured and even tries to lend helpful guidance, only for it to be immediately disregarded.

He and his partner would later join the group of the protagonists of the second Digimon series as full members and help undo the harm inflicted by The Digimon Emperor. Overall, he is a prime example of a loyal companion who always sticks by their partner’s side no matter what.

5 Patamon

Patamon is the partner Digimon to Takeru Takaishi. Patamon is the last of the partner Digimon to jump from Rookie to Champion, but when they do, they become Angemon, the archival to the current major antagonist at the time, Devimon.

Patamon reverts back to an egg after their fight and contributes a lot to the story’s development and emotional turmoil. They are one of the partner Digimon that provide a lot of plot development throughout the main story of the series.

4 Agumon

Agumon from Digimon Adventures prepares to use pepperbreathe in a misty forest

Agumon is one of the most popular Digimon in the franchise and has been used as a Partner Digimon more than any other Digimon across several series, games and marketing media. The most well-developed incarnation appears in the original Digimon series.

They are always there for their partner and develop a powerful bond. One of the most emotional moments in the series from him trying to achieve the rank of Ultimate. The first time he achieves this, all the negative treatment and stress he receives has a significant backlash, resulting in him becoming SkullGreymon and posing a threat to the very friends he wishes to protect.

3 Omnimon

Omnimon acts as a beacon with lots of space and galaxy like effects around their shine

Many fans’ first taste of two Digimon fusing into a single Digimon more powerful than the sum of its parts was Omnimon. Although they appear in many of the series, there is no “best” version of them, just different.

Despite that, they serve as a paragon and protector, guiding allies as a leader. They are formed when the Mega-ranked Digimon of MetalGarurumon and WarGreymon merge together and have been a key character in many important factions.

2 Impmon

Impmon is the third series equivalent of Gatomon, having a tragic backstory yet still meant for greater things. Their earlier involvement sees them as more of an annoyance for the protagonists than any threat.

Over time, their backstory reveals why he dislikes and distrusts humans after he was seen as little more than an object to follow orders. He would reach the rank of Mega in the form of Beelzemon and follow a path of darkness and destruction before one of redemption.

1 BlackWarGreymon

BlackWarGreymon looks off into the distance seeking answers

Out of all the tragic backstories to befall a character and the various Digimon backstories to have gone through, one of the most bleak and depressing is that of Blackwargreymon. While his sole purpose was created to bring about destruction, he has self-awareness and longs for a deeper, more meaningful purpose.

In combat, they have shown a level of strength and resilience that exceeds others of their rank, making them one of the most powerful Megas encountered in the series.
