10 most haunted places in the Western U.S. include a Bay Area gem

Last Halloween, Conde Nast Traveler released a very fun list, naming nearly three dozen sites — towns, hotels, cemeteries, prisons and even an airport — as the most haunted places in America.

Of course, the Lizzie Borden house is on the list. It’s now a bed and breakfast in Fall River, Massachusetts, where slumber and spirits go hand-in-ghostly-hand. The Colorado resort that inspired Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel in “The Shining” makes the list, too. And so does San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House, which is currently celebrating its centennial with a year’s worth of festivities.

Other spooky spots include Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, where the ghostly Lady in Waiting haunts various locations around the airport, unable to find peace since she was jilted by her fiance, we’re told — not her airline. And at Nevada’s century-old Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah, the Lady in Red is said to whisper sweet nothings in gentlemen’s ears and leave pearls under guests’ pillows, which seems like the very nicest sort of haunting.
