More than 30,000 people took part in the London Pride parade on Saturday, as the city marked the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first protest in 1972, uniting to celebrate those veterans who paved the way for the LGBTQ+ community, and marching forward for its continued progress.

After a parade that kicked off at Hyde Park Corner and culminated at Whitehall Place, a vast street party took in performances from Ava Max, Emeli Sandé, Eurovision winner Netta, Samantha Mumba, and Kat Graham.

A return to large-scale celebrations following the pandemic, the focus this year was on visibility, unity, and equality for all LGBTQ+ people. “We strive to be a safe haven and beacon of hope for queer, trans and BIPOC individuals around the world,” said spokesperson Haven Thorn, one of 150 volunteers who worked to make this year’s Pride—which was predicted to draw record numbers—happen. “Pride is about inclusivity and awareness that Pride in London is more than an annual celebration, it uplifts our community 365 days a year, inspiring and empowering every LGBTQ+ person to proudly love and live their truth.”
