11 Movies Like ‘Knives Out’ and ‘Glass Onion’ to Hone Your Detective Skills

Murder mysteries are the best because we get to play along and try to solve whodunit before the fictional sleuths. It’s like a game. What’s even better, and what makes movies like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and Glass Onion so successful, is an ensemble where everyone is a suspect and a lot of gossipy secrets are revealed over the course of the film. Here are some of the best ensemble murder mysteries if dictionary gentleman detective Benoit Blanc’s latest exploit has you itching to crack another case. Many of the best are adapted from novels. Agatha Christie was one of the most prolific whodunit authors. Many are totally original!

Also, if you’re in the mood for a longer binge, there’s a fun miniseries adaptation of Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence on Amazon Prime Video. There’s also a recent-ish miniseries adaptation of And Then There Were None, a Christie story that clearly inspired Glass Onion—it’s about a group of people who are mysteriously invited to a remote island and picked off one by one. There’s also The Afterparty on Apple TV+, a murdery mystery comedy with a lot of your faces like Ben Schwartz, Tiffany Haddish, Ilana Glazer, Sam Richardson, Ike Barinholtz, and Dave Franco. I could really keep going! But on with the 11 best mystery movies like Knives Out:

The board game gets a shoutout in Glass Onion, but there’s never a bad time to watch the hilarious murder mystery comedy. The ensemble works together perfectly. You’ll never look at those little playing pieces from Parker Brothers again. I honestly might go watch it right now.

‘Murder on the Orient Express’

Before Glass Onion, Leslie Odom Jr. starred in another ensemble murder mystery with of-the-moment actors and connections between the characters that are revealed throughout: Murder on the Orient Express, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s campiest detective (and clear inspiration for Benoit Blanc) Hercule Poirot.

For this Hercule Poirot adaptation, however, I suggest you go with the 1978 film rather than the recent film. It has an iconic cast including Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, and Maggie Smith. It is a sunny, beloved murder mystery classic.

This one is basically like a murder mystery version of Downton Abbey. It even (and, like Death on the Nile, also) stars Maggie Smith! Stories and films like this provide the thesis for the Benoit Blanc films: rich people are ridiculous and almost always horrible.

’70s nostalgia is very in right now, and without giving too much away, there are some similarities between this and Glass Onion. The screenplay for this movie was written by Anthony Perkins, who starred in a little film called Psycho, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim did the score. Remember in Knives Out when Benoit Blanc sang along to the Sondheim tune “Losing My Mind” from Follies in the car? That was an homage to Sondheim’s love for murder mysteries and involvement in this film.

It doesn’t get more ’90s than John Candy and Jim Belushi. Two tourists in Monte Carlo, Monaco return a lost dog only to discover the dog’s owner has been murdered. Various couples in Monte Carlo seem suss, and a detective is brought in to sort things out.

This adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel came out the same year as Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express and therefore flew under the radar. It has an impressive cast as well including Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson, and Glenn Close.

This Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston collab for Netflix pokes fun at Agatha Christie mysteries with a romantic comedy twist. The two stars play a married couple who rekindle their relationship while attempting to clear their name.

This one is more of a film noir homage set in high school, similar to Veronica Mars and some choice episodes of Riverdale, but it is directed by Rian Johnson and stars his longtime collaborator Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Star Wars completists might want to know that this movie has a story by George Lucas himself. It’s about a murder that takes place at the taping of an old-time radio show.
