Mother’s Day rolls around but once a year. Flowers are lovely but comestibles are even better! So, treat her to some delicious experiences and amazing views instead. Here is a roundup of some of my favorite places to grab a drink and a bite in the U.S., as well as delicious things to order for her online.
1) Drive her up to Sonoma Valley for a stunning tasting at Jordan winery and an overnight at the Inn at Newport Ranch for breathtaking views and inventive cuisine.
2) If you are not lucky enough to find yourself in NYC, ship her a dozen Barney Greengrass bagels with a hefty side of lox. This old school deli just got a mention in the New York Times top 100 restaurants’ section.
3) Baklava: get her some at places like Damascus Bakery on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. These honey-drenched pastries with flakey crust are irresistible.
4) Take her for a drink at Ruby’s Bar on the Coney Island Boardwalk for old time’s sake, followed by a little Georgian food afterwards.
5) Fly her to Chicago to eat at Sayat Nova which serves some of the best eggplant-infused Armenian dishes. Indulge her with a taste of Pomegranate wine and some crunchy kibbe.
6) Otherwise take her to Burbank for similarly stunning Armenian eats right near the airport: Hayat’s Kitchen is a standout!
7) For stunning views of Seattle and a great wine list, take her to Seattle classic Canlis, where the restaurant’s stunning perch will give mom a great view of the Puget Sound.
8) Blow her mind with the juicy soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung, a Taiwanese restaurant with multiple locations in Seattle. Or get them delivered to your door from Eat.mila along with a handy steamer.
9) Either take her to Los Angeles for a Pizza Orgasmica pie or have a frozen one delivered: these Brazilians do know their way around pizza
10) Walk up Capitol Hill in Seattle to build up an appetite and then dig into modern and delicious Vietnamese food at Monsoon.
11) San Francisco’s Perbacco does stunning pasta dishes that melt in your mouth: so, split an order of Agnolotti al Plin with a nice Piedmontese Barbera or Dolcetto.
12) For dinner you could head to Boulette’s Larder for stunning views of the Bay and Middle Eastern-influenced, locally sourced dishes.
13) Drown her in cheese: buy some creamy Epoisses and order in some of the Rogue Creamery’s classic blue cheese.
14) Blow her mind with the elaborate, Japanese-influenced tasting menu at Mäs in Ashland.
15) Help her get her inner cook on with gorgeous Cangshan knives and Burlap & Barrel spices, the caramelized onions give crunch to everything from salads to eggs.
