The reconstruction of Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral has entered a new phase with a massive shipment of stone arriving via the Seine that will be used to rebuild its famous vaulted ceilings.
The stones were excavated from France’s Oise region and cut in Gennevilliers. They were placed on barges and floated to the banks of the Seine near the Cathedral where they were then lifted by cranes.
Journalist Paul Abran of Le Parisien documented the work on Twitter.
Crews are rushing to meet the 2024 deadline for re-opening the Cathedral to the public. That goal remains an ambitious one, but public officials continue to remain optimistic that it can be met.
Rebuilding the arches and the ceiling would mark a major step forward in the reconstruction effort. The fire on April 14, 2019, left a gaping hole in the roof of the cathedral.
Masons will now work on rebuilding the 4 vaults that cover the transept below. That will finally close the ceiling and should allow work inside the cathedral to proceed more quickly.
