“Both deodorants and antiperspirants are suitable for everyday use, depending on what benefits you are looking for,” New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Rosemarie Ingleton tells Allure. 

Some might even turn to both for different situations. “If you are looking for all-day-freshness and odor protection, but don’t necessarily need or want the sweat protection that a harder-working antiperspirant provides, you may choose to use a deodorant product,” she says. But if you’re concerned about staying dry, then Ingleton recommends you look for an antiperspirant.

However flooded the market is with options — and goodness, is it — it’s important to remember that choosing to wear a deodorant is a personal choice, and that for many folks, a little musk is perfectly natural. “Patients often think that if they have body odor they might be unwell, or that they might be perceived as having poor hygiene,” Ingleton says, adding that body odor is a result of skin bacteria mixing with sweat.
