Yelp is out with its Top 100 Places to Eat, an annual crowd-sourced rating of restaurants — including food trucks, sandwich shops and bakeries — that diners visited in 2022 and hope to return to this year.
Two Bay Area restaurants cracked the national list, and both are in Burlingame. One’s a deli on the bay side of town and the other is a Japanese curry specialist located downtown.
Gigi’s Cafe, which ranked No. 14, draws a devoted following for its “big sandwiches made with care,” the Yelp report said. Fans rave about the breakfast sammies and the overstuffed lunchtime favorites like the Blazin’ Buffalo chicken, Chipotle Is My Life and Turkey Avocado Smash.
Chef-owner Teresa Gee, a Le Cordon Bleu grad, opened the cafe inside an Anza Boulevard office building in 2017. A trained pastry chef, she also offers a daily array of baked goods.
Curry Cyuga, No. 55 on the list, wins praise for comfort dishes like Katsu Curry, a panko-crusted chicken breast drizzled with a curry that one Yelper says has a “balanced, layered flavor and a beautiful texture that’s thick and hearty without feeling too heavy.”
The report notes that “if you like more heat, you’ll find a variety of pepper powders on your table — such as togarashi (a Japanese spice blend), jalapeño, and an orange habanero powder that really packs a punch.”
The curry house is located downtown at 1204 Broadway.
Three other Northern California restaurants made the Yelp 100:
— West Coast Taco Bar (Sacramento): This food truck is known for its Dirty Diana birria tacos and Bitchin’ Cali burritos stuffed with carne asada and garlic shrimp.
— The Kitchen (Sacramento): Chef Kelly McCown creates a Michelin-starred open-kitchen dining experience for guests. The grass-fed beef dishes are particularly popular with Yelpers.
— Timmy’s Brown Bag (Placerville): The Yelp report says owner Tim Swischuk, a former college professor of architecture, offers “culinary mashups like the Enchilada Suizas Sandwich, featuring pork in salsa verde, Swiss cheese, salsa, pickled carrots and romaine on ciabatta, and a Chicken Satay Sandwich with peanutty grilled chicken, harissa cucumber slaw, sweet chili sauce and key lime mayo.
