Two world premieres, a musical about civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer and a new, Bay Area-based take on “Little Shop of Horrors” highlight TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s new season.

The Palo Alto company’s 52nd season, running November through August 2023, also includes the West Coast premiere of “In Every Generation,” a look at one family’s deep connection with Passover, and a revival of the Southern comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias.”

“We invite audiences to lift their voices with us this season,” said artistic director Tim Bond, who will be entering his third season with TheatreWorks. “In celebration that live, in-person theatre has returned; in awe for thrilling moments of joy and
theatricality; in unison as we share these diverse stories of global cultures, people, and perspectives.”

Subscription packages are now on sale at TheatreWorks’ box office, 877-662-8978, or online at www.theatreworks.org.

Here’s the season in a nutshell.

“Little Shop of Horrors”: The classic Alan Menken/Howard Ashman musical comedy about a mild-mannered florist and the ruthless man-eating plant he develops gets a new-look production to kick off the new season and serve as TheatreWorks’ holiday show. Directed by Jeffrey Lo, this “Little Shop” is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown. It plays Nov. 30-Dec. 24 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

“In Every Generation”: Ali Viterbi’s play, which got its world premiere three months ago in Chicago, centers on a multi-cultural, multi-generational family’s celebration of Passover, which leads to a wide-ranging exploration of history, politics, tragedy and faith. It plays Jan.18-Feb. 12 at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts.

“Fannie: The Music and Life of Fannie Lou Hamer”: Cheryl L. West’s musical about the determined and resilient civil rights leader and feminist will be directed by Bond and features a return to TheatreWorks by actor Greta Oglesby in the title role. It’s a part she has played before as a company member at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The show runs March 8-April 2 at the Lucie Stern Theatre.

“A Distinct Society”: Kareem Fahmy’s play, getting its world premiere at TheatreWorks, in association with the Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City, is set at a small library the straddles the Vermont/Canada border and becomes a political/cultural focal point during President Donald Trump’s so-called “Muslim Travel Ban” of 2017. Giovanna Sardelli directs the play, which runs April 5-30 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

“Steel Magnolias”: Robert Harling’s 1987 comedy/drama about a close-knit group of small-town Southern women might be best know for the star-studded film adaptation it spawned (with Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts). TheatreWorks’ revival, to be directed by Elizabeth Carter, plays June 2-July 7 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

“Alice Bliss”: The world premiere musical by Jenny Giering and Adam Gwon, is set in rural upstate New York during the Iraq War and focuses on a teenage girl who has hit rock bottom and seeks to reconnect with her mother. It plays July 12-Aug. 6, 2023 at the Lucie Stern Theatre; Mark Brokaw directs.
