The match which extended for over four-and-a-half-hour saw the Spaniard stun the 23-time Grand Slam champion with his supreme forehand and backhand shots accompanied with a monk-like concentration. The heir-apparent of the ‘Big 3’ blew the winds of change with all his might.

Alcaraz has now taken the fewest attempts to win two Grand Slam titles in the Open Era. The US Open win in September last year was his first major title. Since 2002, he is only the fifth player after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

Djokivic had entered the match as the favourtite having already won the grass court event seven times in his career. A win against Alcaraz could have seen him win the Wimbledon title for the fifth consecutive time.

However, the youngster showed tremendous grit to bounce back after a 6-1 demolition by the 36-year-old in the first set.

Alcaraz turned up the heat in the second set and broke Djokovic before being returned the favour immediately. A tie-breaker followed and the world number one player bounced back once again after Djokovic went 3-0 up. He played his skin out to win the set 7-6 (8-6).

He then breezed past the 23-time Grand Slam champion with a 6-1 win in the third set to take a 2-0 lead. Djokovic then held nerves to take the fourth set 6-3 but only after an argument with the chair umpire for being cautioned to not take too much time while launching his serves.

Alcaraz looked chuffed ahead of the championship set but had to endure a frustrating wait after Djokivic again took his own time to get back on the court.

Once the final set kicked off Djokovic had to fight to hold his serve in the very first game. Djokovic had a golden chance of breaking Alcaraz in the second game but he netted an easy winner and could not believe his own eyes.

Having smelled blood, Alcaraz never looked back. A colossal forehand for the championship point forced Djokovic to net. ‘Legend Killer’ Alcaraz crashed on the green grass first, then hugged Djokovic and ran to his box to celebrate with his team and family members.
