The 2021 BMW 4-Series Convertible lost its retractable hard-top option, which some saw as a big loss for the model. In fact, the return of its soft top is actually a major aesthetic win for this ever-popular BMW model. Besides being pretty on the outside, there are some nice exterior detailing options that make this model a great choice at under $60,000, and drivers also get fantastic on-road experience. We tried out the 2021 4-Series Convertible to see where its real strengths and weaknesses lie.
Great Powertrain
The base model gets a 2.0L four-cylinder unit outputting 255-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is a nice start to the series. If you opt for the more powerful M440i model, then you get a 3.0L six-cylinder with 382-hp and 396 lb-ft for that extra potency. RWD and AWD are available with both engine options, but the latter comes with an added $2,000 price tag.
The mechanics in the powertrain are impressive, with both engines benefiting from a twin-scroll turbocharger and a high-precision fuel injection system. There’s also Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, which can help to improve emissions even further in this 2nd-generation 4-Series Convertible.
Improved Exterior Design
This new generation of 4-Series Convertible is longer, and wider than the previous model. To be precise, it has an extra 5.2 inches in length, 0.1 inches in height and an inch in width. The larger build creates a more aggressive look, especially when combined with the enlarged signature kidney grille design that the latest BMW models started to receive in 2020. The powerful lines and bold intake design help to highlight the new dimensions of the vehicle, but the front fascia and new grille have proven somewhat controversial, and are not universally loved.
The new soft-top roof pulls extremely taut when closed, which despite the fabric material creates an effective illusion of the car being a coupe. At the same time, however, you get that timeless cabriolet look from the outset that helps add depth to this new 4-Series. Furthermore, the soft-top roof is a whole 40 percent lighter than the retractable hard-top, which helps in fuel efficiency, as well as making it more agile as a performance vehicle.
The roof can be lowered or raised in just 18 seconds, and can be operated at speeds up to 31-mph. Its surface is smooth enough to offer real benefits to the car’s overall aerodynamic performance, and the car is also fitted as standard with a wind deflector to reduce wind noise and air turbulence.
Superb Media System
The main highlight on the interior of the vehicle is the high-quality multimedia system. The system is intuitive and easy to use both while parked and on the road. The flawless display means you never miss a thing and every control is within easy reach. You can also integrate Apple CarPlay or Android Auto if they are your preferred in-car systems. Connection is seamless and easy.
There’s ample storage, and comfortable seating plus many different interior themes, colors and materials to choose from.
Top Segment Option
The 2021 BMW 4-Series Convertible offers dynamic driving, stylish exterior looks and a return to the soft-top design which helps boost aerodynamics. It’s a solid purchase in the $60,000 range, and competes well against the likes of the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet.
