2022 BRZ is not Subaru normalcy

Naturally aspirated and naturally fun … for some!

Ice Silver Metallic paint wraps the Subaru BRZ Limited’s exterior, all while enjoying the $30,000 price tag. In typical Subaru fashion, it’s all about the fun and for the BRZ, this is exactly that. But for a certain classification, that is of the younger crowd or aspiring Subaru lovers.

As a sports coupe the Subaru BRZ pairs well with its six-speed manual transmission keeping fun at the forefront while the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated, dual overhead camshaft four-cylinder Boxer engine produces 228 horsepower. We notice a 15% increase in torque as well, jumping to 184 lb.-ft.

This two-door sports coupe, or double bubble as I like to call it, is peppy and some will really enjoy the basics it has to offer.

The interior is a rare site for Subaru as you can tell it had some help in the design and implementation of the BRZ. Help? Yes, of course, the BRZ is the same vehicle as the Toyota GR86, formerly known as the Scion FRS. When it comes to shared design and manufacturing, nothing ever comes out right. Because simply it is a dog and pony show from the design leads to display what they have to offer, while nothing makes sense for the opposing brand. There’s the lackluster infotainment system, small instrument cluster for the driver, plastic-like styling trim and rear seats that don’t even make sense to ask someone to sit in the back as leg room is nonexistent.

For a full-frame guy like myself, the BRZ is really hard to get in and out of, get comfortable in, or even see out of. I understand the purpose of the BRZ in the fleet, but struggle to accept it.

Subaru, with a loyal, cult-like following, did not do its consumers any favors with the BRZ. In fact, similar to the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra marriage, I am not impressed. With the WRX in the fleet already, why is this even an option in such a natural, outdoorsy, wilderness enjoying brand like Subaru? Although a purpose exists in the young and hip market, mark my words, this will be on the discontinued list in the near future.
