Look out for the taillights on Ford Maverick trucks. The new hybrid pickup might not actually be braking.
As many as 11,098 2022 Ford Maverick trucks are under a recall notice for unintended brake lights. A problem with the Antilock Brake System (ABS) can cause the brake lights to turn on even if the driver doesn’t touch the brake pedal. The misleading lighting doesn’t comply with federal vehicle safety standards.
Ford has a software fix available for owners who bring in their vehicles to a local dealer. Meanwhile there’s no warning that the issue will happen, so the likelihood of a crash increases. No incidents have been reported yet.
The brake light issue was first brought to Ford on Aug. 26 and there have been 23 claims about unintended brake lighting. In the past three months Ford sold 13,049 Mavericks, according to Motor Intelligence data, and the 2023 model is nearly sold out, according to reports.
The Ford Maverick was reintroduced as a small hybrid pickup for 2022, borrowing the name from a 1969 Ford truck. For 2023, pricing starts at $22,195.
