The problem may cause the truck to suddenly lose power, and is the second water-based recall for the leaky-v

GMC’s new Hummer EV has sprung a second leak, following an August 2022 recall over an issue with its high-voltage connector allowing water into the battery pack. The proverbial tap hasn’t been shut off, either, as now, there’s another similar issue. Water could still get inside Hummer EV battery packs as a result of improper sealing.

The consequence? The Hummer EV may either not start; or suddenly lose power during operation, which is awful if you’re sailing down the highway and suddenly have an anchor stop you in your tracks, as per a recent InsideEVs article.

This recall affects 735 GMC Hummer EVs; and 89 BrightDrop EV600 electric vans, seeing as both use General Motors’ Ultium platform and have similar battery packs, which are manufactured by Magna. Thankfully, the company is only aware of three situations when this issue created problems, but those three are enough to issue a recall.

Technically speaking, the problem is improperly primed or electrocoated battery pack flanges “inhibiting proper adhesion of the urethane sealant.” The recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) adds that “vehicles equipped with high-voltage battery pack enclosures produced outside of the supplier’s suspect manufacturing window are not included in this recall.”

The vehicles impacted were produced between November 9, 2021; and September 28, 2022. The affected EV600 vans were made between March 3 and June 24, 2022.

If (and apparently when, in some cases) water enters the battery pack, warning lights and messages will appear in the the main display. On a slightly positive wave, GM says this so far hasn’t led to a battery pack fire, and zero injuries are reported.

The undertow news is the automaker hasn’t announced a fix or solution, which makes it challenging to repair, so replacement appears to be the charted course, but that’s not confirmed. GM predicts it’ll contact owners starting October 28.
