2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE: Review And Impressions

0

I recently spent some time in the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE. Larger than the Toyota Corolla, and slightly smaller than the Toyota Avalon, the popular Camry is a near-perfect fit for individuals and families both young and old.

  • The Toyota Camry is a mid-size, four-door, sedan that has been on sale in the US since 1983. The five-passenger vehicle is offered with front- or all-wheel drive with a variety of engine choices. Today’s Camry – an eighth-generation model – was last completely redesigned for the 2018 model year.
  • Toyota treated the Camry to a mid-cycle refresh for 2021 that included a restyled exterior, enhanced Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ system, and enlarged infotainment screens. The 2022 models arrive with a new Nightshade edition (black accents) and new exterior colors.
  • The Hybrid XSE was an all-new trim last year that combined the fuel-efficient Camry Hybrid with the sporty attributes of the XSE trim – literally the best of both worlds. The exterior is enhanced with a more athletic appearance and the interior is upgraded with amenities such as heated and cooled seats, a nine-speaker (800-watt) JBL Audio system, and the new 9.0-inch infotainment display.
  • Under the hood, the XSE Hybrid boasts a naturally-aspirated, 2.5-liter, inline-4 that is mated to an electric motor. Combined, total system power is 208 hp. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends power to the front wheels. Fuel economy is impressive – expect to earn about 45 mpg over.
  • While the CVT is (by design) a lackluster transmission, it works well in the Camry Hybrid XSE. Despite the impressive combined horsepower figure, acceleration is leisurely (0-60 takes about 7.5 seconds). But in the real world it feels just fine – and the notable fuel economy is worth sacrificing a second or two in a quick sprint.
  • Thankfully, Toyota gifted the XSE with the sporty cosmetic improvements and not the upgraded suspension of the Camry TRD models (which give those vehicles an unnecessarily harsh ride). In contrast, the HSE has a really well controlled ride. Nobody will ever accuse the vehicle of being a “sport sedan,” but the ride is very comfortable without being sloppy.
  • The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE is my top choice in Toyota’s Camry lineup. The base price of about $33,000 delivers a roomy and comfortable family sedan that will achieve upwards of 50 mpg for most drivers – and it’s attractive and enjoyable to drive.
  • The professional verdict: Highly recommended
