This story should come as no surprise. Husqvarna is owned by KTM, the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer most synonymous with hardcore adventuring. So, when Husky first took the wrappers off the new Norden 18 months ago, the rumours of a deeper-woods adventure-touring version were already ripe.

Fast-forward to 2023 and we have the Expedition, a Norden roundly improved so you can go farther, faster, and deeper, as I said, into the woods. The upgrade that will benefit true adventurers most will be the suspension, both ends of the Expedition benefiting from WP’s top-of-the-line fully-adjustable XPLOR dampers. There’s 240 millimetres of travel all around, which works out to a 25-mm upgrade up front; and a 20-mm tweak to the rear.
Husqvarna also raided its accessories catalogue to lend the Expedition more touring comfort. Standard on the up-level Norden are heated handlebar grips, a heated seat, and a larger touring-oriented windshield. Throw in the previously optional centrestand, some durable “Side Bag” luggage, and a gargantuan skid plate that protects both engine and tank, and you will have completed the transformation. Husky’s Connectivity Unit, optional on the standard Norden 901, also makes the grade allowing turn-by-turn navigation, as well as smartphone connectivity for phone calls and music.

Like the standard Norden, the Expedition is powered by a KTM-derived 889-cc parallel-twin engine, though, in Husky guise, it’s tuned for more mid-range torque. Power delivery and cornering-sensitive traction-control intervention are controlled by four selectable ride modes, Street, Rain, Off-road, and Explorer, with that last allowing for a whopping nine different levels of rear-wheel slip; and a unique information display tailored for more committed off-roading.
The Norden 901 Expedition will cost $17,199 in Canada. Look for Driving’s road test review soon.
