21 autumn jackets to nail this trans-seasonal period

0

It’s boiling in the afternoon, but we bet you’re feeling the chill in the mornings. Too early for a winter coat and too cool to go without, these autumn jackets are exactly what your wardrobe needs during the trans-seasonal period. And just because you’re wearing them in an in-between season, doesn’t mean they need to relegated when the cold does properly set in. With a few clever styling tricks you can layer these women’s autumn jackets well into winter, meaning you’ve made a clever purchase – and a more sustainable one, too.

So, what should you look for if you’re shopping for new-in autumn jackets?

Shirt styles are super versatile – we’re talking that modern classic: the shacket. You can throw them on over a t-shirt, tie them round your waist and layer them under a thicker wool coat when it’s properly winter. Cotton autumn jackets work all-year round like Warehouse’s colour block option and Marks & Spencer’s cotton style, while brushed wool, tweed or borg jackets will be super cosy. Rail’s sage green herringbone tweed shacket is one of our faves.

Bomber jackets and biker jackets are perennially cool. Miss Selfridge has a pale pink style with fringing while Karen Millen has updated the classic leather ‘Perfecto’ style with double breasted fastenings, which gives it a military vibe. Blazers are obviously a year-round go to but don’t think you need to choose something dark and dreary. McQ Alexander McQueen has a checked corduroy style in a pumpkin spice shade we adore while Free People’s plaid shade is peppy and cheerful, and comes in a slouchy boyfriend silhouette. For full on dopamine dressing, Vero Moda have created a faux leather blazer in Elle Woods pink, the colour of the season – and beyond. Wear it with emerald green for a colour clash or sandy tones to make the shade pop against a neutral outfit.

Don’t forget patchwork-detailed quilted jackets either. Following on from summer’s cottagecore obsession, these folksy jackets are a slightly warmer option. Yes, they are cosy and quilted, but they often come in paler or bright colours, meaning they don’t feel too heavy this early into Autumn. Hunter Bell has a dreamy style, trimmed in black, while Cara Cara’s jacket is neatly cropped. Try it with a pair of high-waisted jeans. Whichever style of autumn coat you choose, keep wearing it through the winter with clever layers (and the addition of a scarf, hat and gloves.)
