Nothing screams summer like wearing one of the best crochet dresses. The ultimate warm-weather recipe? A beachy dress (and what’s more on-theme than crochet?), an aperol in your hand and the sun on your face.
Forget what you thought you knew: they’re no longer a piece to reserve for festival season. Something of a chameleon, able to be paired with everything from sandals to cowboy boots, crochet dresses offer that undone-yet-put-together look that can transform from a poolside cover-up to a date-night outfit. With little to no effort. From the peek-a-boo look of the material to the variety of lengths and range of colour combinations, when it comes to crochet dresses, its the simplicity of these things – plus the benefit of being able to throw them on and go – that keeps celebrities, stylists and influencers alike coming back to them.
From the dizzying fields of Glastonbury Festival last month, where we spotted Poppy Delevigne rocking a bright and bold mini iteration, to the streets of Paris where Mica Arganaraz was seen wearing Alaia’s take on the trend at Haute Couture Fashion Week, crochet dresses are continuing to pop up everywhere. But the beauty of these silhouettes is that they’re not just for special occasions or fancy affairs. We’re seeing the fashion crowds of TikTok and Instagram don open-knit summer dresses while running errands, even.

We get it; the mere thought of wearing something that flashes a bit of skin is a daunting one. The summer months bring a new wave of body confidence woes to a lot of us, and not everyone is comfortable in a bodycon mini-dress or a celebrity-approved sheer dress, and that’s OK. There’s no pressure to wear something just because it feels like everyone else is.
That said, if you do fancy dipping your toe, we’re here to assure you those “but won’t it be see-through?” alarm bells can be switched off. While we can agree there are certainly some more daring silhouettes than others out there, a lot of these close-knit fabrics are actually a lot more opaque than they look. What’s more, if you’re looking for something more modest, try styling one of the more exposed styles with a contrasting slip beneath it.
