They will be the biggest tickets in town at the opening night of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the idea, unveiled this week, is that at €24 per ticket ($25), it will also be the most inclusive opening event ever.

Tony Estanguet, a three-time Olympic champion in canoeing and president of the Paris Olympic Committee, revealed details of the events this week, with the aim of showing off the city’s sights. He told the press this week, “we want to bring the sports out of the stadiums and into the city to include the iconic landmarks of Paris. So we are working with museums and other venues to organise competitions at landmark sites–for example, fencing will be in the Grand Palais, archery and para archery at Les Invalides, volleyball and blind football at the Eiffel Tower.”

Likewise, the opening ceremony will not be held inside a sports stadium, as is customary at the Olympics, but instead will be held along the river Seine. That way, more people can see it and be involved—up to 600,000 people. Boats will pass by the Eiffel Tower and also the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which it is hoped will be fully renovated and restored after the fateful fire that destroyed it in April 2019.

And in order to be as accessible as possible, the Paris Committee have pledged that one million tickets will be available for $24 (€25) and that half of all tickets will cost less than $50.

Events are also planned for other places around France with much of the sailing taking place in Marseille in Provence, and the French island of Tahiti in Polynesia, will host the surfing competitions. Lille will host the handball, equestrians will be based at the Palais de Versailles and six cities will host the football—Marseille, Nice, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux and Nantes.

Tickets go on sale in February 2023 but with accommodation prices set to rocket, now might be a good time to book hotels and apartments.
