Finding spring jackets and spring coats are top of our fashion priority list right now. Why? Once again we find ourselves amidst a transitional time of year where we know we’ll need some form of outerwear but exactly what kind is a bit of a guessing game. Not too thick, not too light, but something that’ll provide refuge if a breeze picks up or the heavens decide to open is ideal.
‘Transitional fashion’ is often seen as a bit of a confusing, wasteful concept – as if to ‘fill the time’ while you wait for the real season to kick in – but realistically we spend a lot of our time in these intermediate periods. When spring’s not quite here, when summer’s not quite left, when there’s an autumnal breeze but it remains warm, when winter has definitely passed but it’s really rainy outside… you know the drill. You almost certainly know the wardrobe woes that come with it, too.
We know that our weather is unpredictable, no matter the time of year, but ever the true Brits we try not to let it deter us. Absolutely nothing will stop us from clinking glasses with our friends over an al fresco meal, and although spring is still a couple of week’s away, we’re going to act as though it has already arrived. Fashion isn’t the answer to everything, but a good – more importantly, functional – outfit will make the welcoming of a new season a whole lot sweeter.
Right now, while the 20th of March seems set on teasing us, you need some great trans-seasonal coats and jackets to make those spring outfits a little cosier but, crucially, not sweaty.
Consider the usual high-street suspects of ASOS, H&M and Mango to serve you in your quest to find spring layers, but don’t be afraid to splurge a little. As we already know, spring isn’t the only in-between season where this sort of silhouette is deemed useful, so it’s not like you’re only ever going to wear it once. Loewe and Dries Van Noten make the case for luxury outerwear, while RIXO and AllSaints are great for middle-ground budgets.
From great blazers and classic trenches to biker style leather and denim jackets, spring outerwear proves a crucial added layer of warmth while we wait for the sun to make a proper appearance.
