According to TNT’s Chris Haynes, the Suns have put two other recently fired coaches on their preliminary list. They have reportedly identified Mike Budenholzer and Nick Nurse as early candidates.
Suns associate coach Kevin Young is also in the running for a promotion.
Haynes said the list will grow, identifying the position as “one of the prime openings on the market.”

Williams took Phoenix to the 2021 NBA Finals, where he lost to Budenholzer’s Milwaukee Bucks. However, both coaches got dismissed this month after disappointingly early playoff exits.
The Suns, a prominent championship contender after acquiring Kevin Durant, lost a second-round series to the top-seeded Denver Nuggets. Although limited depth hurt them in the postseason, they have a star-studded nucleus in Durant, Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton.
A 2019 championship wasn’t enough for the Toronto Raptors to retain Nick Nurse after a 41-41 season ended with two play-in tournament losses. The ring should nevertheless make him a top option for any other team with a vacancy.
Young was one of several assistants reported as a candidate for Toronto’s job. The 41-year-old has spent the last three seasons in Phoenix.
