4 Places Every ‘Seinfeld’ Fan Should Add To Their Travel Bucket List

When the season nine episode of Seinfeld called “The Strike” aired 24 years ago, a new holiday was born. Even today, fans of the show wish each other a Happy Festivus each December 23, sharing photos and video clips featuring Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) hurling insults at the other characters, shouting “I got a lot of problems with you people and now you’re gonna hear about it!” during the “Airing of Grievances” and taunting his son, George (Jason Alexander), into a wrestling match during the “Feats of Strength.”

In honor of Festivus—which, by the way, was based on a holiday television writer Dan O’Keefe’s father created in real life—here’s a list of places every fan of the show should visit the next time they’re in New York City or, in one case, Melbourne, Australia.

Tom’s Restaurant

Easily the most recognizable diner in the city, Tom’s Restaurant, located on the corner of Broadway and West 112th Street, served as the exterior of Monk’s Café, the Seinfeld characters’ go-to coffee shop. While the interior scenes were actually filmed in a studio, you can still visit and enjoy a meal at Tom’s, a top-notch Greek diner and neighborhood favorite since the 1940s.

Yankee Stadium Tours

To get a feel for the place where George Costanza spent most of his days working—and occasionally, sleeping under his desk—take a tour of Yankee Stadium. Available virtually for free all year round or in person from $50 during baseball season, the tours give guests an inside look at the ballpark, insight into the history of the team, a peek at some of baseball’s most important artifacts and a look at the iconic stadium spots like the New York Yankees Museum and Monument Park.

Kramer’s Reality Tour

While Kramer’s Reality Tour, hosted by Kenny Kramer, the real-life one-time neighbor of Seinfeld creator Larry David, is currently on hiatus for the winter season, it’s still a fantastic way to spend an afternoon if you’re an avid fan and love to hear behind-the-scenes stories about its actors and creators.

Tours cost about $40 per person and meet Saturdays at noon in a theater for a 90-minute presentation before guests board a bus and drive by a few places featured on the show. When I went a few years ago, we stopped at The Original Soup Kitchen at 259A West 55th Street and 8th Avenue, which inspired “The Soup Nazi” episode, to see what all the fuss was about—spoiler alert: the soup is absolutely delicious—and rode uptown to see Tom’s Restaurant, all while viewing clips on tiny TVs and pointing out places we passed where different events had happened on the show.

George’s Bar

If you happen to be visiting Melbourne, Australia, stop by George’s Bar, a friendly neighborhood dive bar in Fitzroy that’s basically a shrine to all things George Costanza. There’s nothing like being worlds away from the Big Apple only to look up and see an enormous mural of George in all his shirtless glory in the alley on the side of the building and the character’s most memorable quotes written on the walls of the entryway. You’ll also find heaps of Seinfeld memorabilia strewn about the walls and seating area — a Frogger machine, a Costanza New York Yankees jersey, an “AssMan” license plate and a tip jar raising money for “The Human Fund, Money for People,” among other recognizable references from the show.
