General manager John Lynch, responding to a rumor circulated by former NFL quarterback and analyst Boomer Esiason, said Tuesday he plans on remaining with the 49ers.
Esiason, a CBS analyst as well as a radio talk show host on WFAN in New York, had this to say about Lynch during a recent appearance on Boston radio station WEEI with Greg Hill:
“The thing to watch is what happens with John Lynch, their general manager,” Esiason said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if John goes back into television anytime soon. He’s had a really great run there and there’s really a lot of quality front office people. I think he may be tired of doing what he’s doing, too. So that’s something to watch here in the offseason.”
From the sound of Lynch’s response during a video conference along with coach Kyle Shanahan, he could have had another TV gig if he wanted one.
“I have not heard that rumor,” Lynch said. “From time to time, opportunities are presented and I can tell you and tell everyone that my commitment is right now to this organization.”
Lynch then reaffirmed his desire to build on what the 49ers accomplished in 2021 in reaching the NFC Championship Game.
“My commitment is to the 49ers, the York family, to Kyle,” Lynch said. “Standing up in front of that team, yesterday, getting an opportunity to reflect on what we have, I do think we have something special. We’re here to win championships and we felt short of that.
“I think both things can be true, that that’s our standard, but also the amount of pride we have . . . it’s a real blessing to be part of this organization. My commitment is right here and that’s where I’ll be.”
Lynch, who was inducted this year into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year, began working for the NFL on Fox after his retirement from playing in 2008 and was a top analyst when he left the broadcast booth to join Shanahan with the 49ers.
