49ers’ Saturday moves: Cue up rookie cornerback to fill in for Johnson, Moseley

CINCINNATI — Eager to see one of the 49ers’ rookie cornerbacks? Sunday will offer that viewing window.

Either Ambry Thomas or Deommodore Lenoir figure to start opposite veteran Josh Norman when the 49ers (6-6) visit the Cincinnati Bengals (7-5) and their collection of hot-shot targets.

“They had a good week. They’ve been competing hard,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday of the rookie cornerbacks.

Emmanuel Moseley’s high-ankle sprain in last Sunday’s loss at Seattle prompted the 49ers to put him on injured reserve Saturday, along with running back Trenton Cannon, who sustained a concussion on the opening kickoff. Moseley’s would-be replacement, Dontae Johnson, was downgraded Saturday to out because of a personal matter.

Lenoir, a fifth-round pick from Oregon, started the first two games of the season before getting demoted in favor of experienced cornerbacks, be they Norman or Moseley. Thomas, a third-round selection from Michigan, has yet to make his starting debut nor play much on defense but he did make enough special-teams plays last weekend to draw praise from Shanahan.

Reinforcements summoned from the practice squad Saturday were cornerback Saivion Smith, wide receiver River Cracraft, running back Brian Hill and safery Jarrod Wilson

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel (groin) remains questionable, as per his designation Friday when the 49ers ruled out running back Elijah Mitchell (concussion, knee), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (knee) and Mo Hurst (calf), along with Moseley and Cannon.
