An ocean-inspired enclave and the urban retreat of a legendary property feature among the noteworthy new hotel spas to travel for in 2023.

This legendary Mayfair hotel has just seen the realisation of a significant development in its 210-year history, the creation of Claridge’s Spa. Of five floors excavated into the London clay, 7,000 sq ft has been dedicated to this new wellness enclave, with acclaimed interior architect Andre Fu taking inspiration from his visits to the temples and Zen gardens of Kyoto for its design. Natural elements such as limestone, wood and water feature throughout wellness space integrating the sounds of flowing water, energy-cleansing music and a visual play on light and shadow. This spa encompasses Claridge’s first ever swimming pool, with cabanas set back from the water, along with seven treatment rooms, a sauna, steam rooms and a dedicated hair and beauty space. Resident brands include Josh Woods, Augustinus Bader and FaceGym and there will be an ever-evolving roster of visiting wellness experts.

This month, the recently opened urban retreat Meliá Chiang Mai unveiled its new YHI spa (a wellness concept inspired by the goddess YHI responsible for life and light) featuring seven treatment rooms designed with an underwater theme and a Thai herbal sauna and steam area. The spa focuses on fusing ancient Asian healing wisdom with modern wellness techniques in treatments, including massages, body scrubs and wraps, facials, hydrotherapy, manicures and pedicures, for women, men and children. The spa’s 360° Spa Signature Treatment comprises 45 minutes of yoga and meditation, a 30-minute herbal blended steam, 90-minute aromatic massage with Thai herbal compress balls and a set menu from a culinary concept designed to minimise food waste and reduce greenhouse emissions. The wellness center then draws on its location for a series of Thai massages. The spa’s treatments are based on organic Thai wellness brand HARNN’s natural products.

This resort spanning 7,000 acres on the Dominican Republic’s south-eastern coast has revealed plans for its cutting-edge new Spa & Wellness Centre opening in spring 2023. Spanning an impressive 18,000 sq ft, the spa will encompass a wealth of indoor and outdoor facilities including a vitality pool, sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, Laconium loungers and an outdoor spa pool, as well as 13 treatment rooms and a private garden with outdoor rain shower. Among the results-oriented therapies here, technology supported treatments will include the JetPeel Facial, MLX i3Dome Triple Detox Therapy, and Binaural Acoustic & Dynamic Stimulation on a Welnamis Table. For extra privacy, guests will be able to make use of the wellness space’s ‘spa within a spa’ incorporating a private entrance, lounge, treatment area, makeup station and dressing area, bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, vitality pool and private bar. The Spa Café and Juice Bar will serve Dominican coffee and smoothies, along with light meals made using seasonal local produce.

The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel, Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel has just opened its brand-new urban oasis, The Fullerton Spa, offering holistic and indulgent wellness therapies in serene space benefitting from panoramic sea views. This new wellness space occupying the hotel’s West Tower houses four treatment rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea, including one that has a bathtub and balcony, as well as shared facilities including a hot tub, vitality pools, a sauna and steam rooms. Wellness experiences here range from the signature Fullerton Blissful Journey encompassing two tailored treatments to the Time for Yourself therapy incorporating a crystal stone massage and 24K gold facial. Other options promoting inclusivity across wellness therapies include a men’s facial and mother-to-be full body treatment. The spa is working with the renowned Bamford and Subtle Energies skincare brands.

This new beachfront retreat set between the jungled cliffs of Punta de Mita is on track to launching Onda, an Auberge Spa as an oceanside sanctuary restoring mind, body and spirit in 2023. The spa’s wellness concept of harnessing the calming and cleansing nature of the ocean will be channeled through ocean-inspired body therapies, provided by expert practitioners including visiting specialists, in 11 sea-facing treatment rooms. Ahead of the spa’s official launch, the resort has introduced Ondita wellness space encompassing four oceanfront treatment rooms for energising treatments including the wave signature massage using locally sourced products. This wellness offering is enhanced with daily movement classes such as yoga, along with a fitness program including beach bootcamps, and sound healing experiences within earshot of the crashing waves.
