Jurgen Klopp previews Liverpool’s clash with Wolves

Liverpool have returned to the top of the Premier League following a dramatic 1-0 victory against Wolves at Molinuex on Saturday.

Substitute Divock Origi scored a 94th minute winner for the Reds to secure three precious points on a tricky afternoon in the West Midlands.

Liverpool have now won five consecutive games in all competitions, gaining momentum ahead of an important run of fixtures.

The Reds face Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa, Tottenham, Chelsea and Leicester in the League Cup quarter-final before the end of the festive period.

Origi’s winner

What a substitution! Klopp threw on Origi to get the winner – and he got the job done with just seconds to spare.

He’s never been a regular for Liverpool, but he always seems to get those crucial goals. And his winner against Wolves could be crucial come May.

The Reds have now scored 13 game-winning goals in the 90th minute or later in the Premier League under Klopp, more than any other team since his arrival.

They just don’t know when they’re beaten.

Quiet first half

Liverpool are usually one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the Premier League, but the first half at Molineux wasn’t a classic.

Neither side managed a shot on target, with Wolves failing to register their first effort until added time.

Liverpool’s slow start was a surprise, as Jurgen Klopp deployed his strongest XI available – including Ballon d’Or contender Mohamed Salah.

“It’s a tactical game, one for the tacticians to enjoy, because there aren’t too many major events happening in the game,” said Fara Williams on commentary.

Jota’s cold feet

Diogo Jota has been in great form since joining Liverpool from Wolves in September 2020, scoring 17 Premier League goals, but he had a difficult afternoon against his old club.

The Portuguese forward missed an open goal just after the hour mark, as Conor Coady blocked his effort on the line.

Just to make matters worse, it was Jota’s 25th birthday! He’ll be hoping for better days throughout the next 12 months.

“Brilliant defending from Conor Coady don’t get me wrong,” said Jermaine Beckford on Final Score. “But how has Diogo Jota missed this massive, massive opportunity?

“He’s managed to pick the ball up and run towards goal and you’re saying it’s a guaranteed goal.”

Coady delivers

Speaking of Coady, it’s only right to admire a stunning display from the former Liverpool star.

The Wolves skipper produced a defiant performance at Molineux, recovering from a nasty ankle injury in the first half to lead his team.

Some Reds fans will remember Coady from his time at Anfield, making two appearances before joining Huddersfield in the summer of 2014.

He went on to move to Wolves 12 months later and has been a revelation since, earning eight England caps to date.

“I don’t know how but Coady’s found himself in the right place at the right time,” said Beckford on his block. “Brilliant.”

Title credentials reaffirmed

After Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to West Ham last month, many questioned whether Klopp’s side were capable of challenging Manchester City and Chelsea for the title.

But their victory against Wolves has propelled them back to the top of the Premier League, leapfrogging the Blues after they – ironically – lost 3-2 to West Ham on Saturday.

Man City can move into pole position with a win at Vicarage Road on Saturday evening, a result most expect them to achieve.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have made a step in the right direction at Molineux and have a great chance of regaining their spot at the top of English football.

Robertson’s brings his 200 up

Andy Robertson made his 200th Premier League appearance against Wolves!

The Scotland captain’s English career began in the summer of 2014, when he joined Hull City from Dundee United.

Robertson suffered relegation that season but was back in the Premier League 12 months later, suffering a second drop with the East Yorkshire outfit.

Liverpool signed him for a reported £8million in the summer of 2017 and, after a slow start, has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world.

Robertson’s position has come under threat following the emergence of Kostas Tsimikas, but there’s no doubting the Scot’s quality.
