“The rise in total cases may be due to a combination of increased awareness of Lyme disease as well as improved surveillance, better access to diagnostics, increased potential for encounters with ticks due to changes in wildlife populations and habitat modification that may have resulted in changes in tick distribution across the country.”
May is Lyme disease Awareness Month and every year, Lyme disease UK runs a national Wake Up To Lyme campaign!
The campaign aims to raise awareness of how to prevent tick bites, how to safely remove ticks, and the importance of early treatment for people who become unwell, following a bite.
It lists “early” symptoms of Lyme disease to spot as:
- Fatigue
- Muscle and joint pain
- Headaches
- Fever and chills
- Neck stiffness
- Nausea
- Digestive issues
- Bull’s-eye rash, known as erythema migraines. This is diagnostic of Lyme disease but it isn’t always present.
