’90s criss-cross ponytails are going viral – here’s how to do the fun nostalgic hair trend

We love the nostalgic beauty looks emerging on TikTok right now, but none more than ’90s criss-cross ponytails we keep seeing on our feeds. The look is playful, practical and most, importantly, easy to recreate at home without the need for loads of expensive products, or a high level of hairdressing skill.

You see, trying to find cute styles that are achievable at home isn’t always so easy. From French plaits to bubble braids, some of the chicest hair looks out there might appear simple enough to create on yourself, but in reality, they usually require a trial run.

Because of this, here at GLAMOUR, we’re always on the lookout for fun new hair trends that can be executed in a matter of minutes to act as a last-minute, fail-safe look. The problem is that the TikTok pros have a way of making their tutorials look a lot easier than they really are for us mere beauty mortals. That’s why, when we stumbled across ’90s criss-cross ponytails in all its simplicity, we got seriously excited.

TikTok user @wendypearlorr took to the app to show off her seriously nostalgic, ’90s criss-cross ponytails, and they really are as easy to do as they look. We’re getting serious Baby Spice vibes, and we’re not mad about it.

The trend involves wearing your hair in a middle parting (Gen Z rejoice), creating two little bunches either side and crossing them over for some retro volume. If you ask us, it makes for the ultimate summer hair trend by keeping your hair out of your face while looking cute at the same time (it’s perfect for any festivals you might have lined up). And the best bit? You only need a brush and some hair elastics. In fact, TikToker @erinduganjurchak proved how simple it is when she gave ’90s criss-cross ponytails a go herself.

“This is so cute, I’m totally going to attempt this,” she says. “Two little pigtails in front, then she crosses them over, grabs hair from the other side to make two other little ponies. I love it, I’m trying it right now!”

Erin goes on to seamlessly recreate the look in a matter of minutes. “That was easy and it’s cute as hell,” she says.
