SHUT IN THEATER: Weekend Reading 156

It’s Saturday, and so it’s time for Weekend Reading 156! As ever, we’re hoping you’ll share your weekend reading plans with us. Give us a shout-out, there in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat, and let us know what you’ll be reading!

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m going to be checking out Schappi by Anna Haifisch. The back cover includes this incredibly enticing copy: “Mankind’s first subject matter for painting was very likely an animal, and Schappi takes us back to the metaphorical origins of anthropomorphism.” Consider my interest piqued! Then, I’m looking into (additional) food-related comics for a Beat project coming up this week, beginning with Beauty and the Feast by Satomi U.

DEAN SIMONS: Been rather burned out this week after the chaos of Star Wars Celebration Europe and planning to take it easy this weekend – the perfect time to relax with a book. Last weekend I finished Elizabeth Moon’s second book in the Vatta’s War series Moving Target and began the follow-up Engaging the Enemy pretty soon after. An entertaining lite sci-fi read. 

TAIMUR DAR: With the first season of the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur cartoon completely available on Disney+, I’ve got a desire to go back where I left off with the original comics with  Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Vol. 3: The Smartest There Is. Likewise, even though I’ve seen the first season of the anime, I’m loving the Spy x Family family. So I’ll be continuing my reading of that over the weekend.

REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: Like Taimur Dar, I am also excited about the first season Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Considering how bad the pain is as I type this, I might even watch the season for a third time this weekend. It’s that good. Also good, is the newest Marvel Comics Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur series by Jordan Ifueko, Alba Glez, José Marzan Jr., KJ Díaz, and Travis Lanham, which I’m finally going to catch up on. Finally, I’m re-reading Tessa Brunton’s Notes from a Sickbed because it’s almost too relatable.
