An Inverness singer who shot to fame after her song went viral on TikTok has been nominated for a prestigious music award alongside Harry Styles, Florence and The Machine and Tom Odell.

Katie Gregson-Macleod’s song Complex went viral overnight last August and has since amassed millions of views on social media.

In the last eight months, she has been signed to Columbia Records and her success is continuing as she has now been nominated for an Ivor award.

The 22-year-old’s song will face off against Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’, Tom Odell’s ‘Best Day of my Life’, and Florence and The Machine’s ‘King’ in the Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

The Ivors Academy said that the award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically is given to those who demonstrated an excellence in songwriting craft in 2022.

The Ivors recognise the work of songwriters and composers across nine categories and have been running since 1956.

Commenting on the nomination, she wrote on social media: “I can’t quite put into words how it feels to say this but ‘complex’ has been nominated for Best Song (Musically and Lyrically) at the Ivor Novello Awards.

“Thank you @ivorsacademy for this honour and to everyone who was instrumental in this song reaching so many.

“I was making shakshuka and crying when I found out.”

This year, 72 individual songwriters and composers have received nominations at the awards, with 54% getting a nod for the first time.

The winners will be announced at Grosvenor House in London on Thursday May 18.

Commenting on all of the nominations this year, Tom Gray, chairman of The Ivors Academy, said: “The music nominated for an Ivor Novello this year is testament to the power and range of British and Irish songwriting and screen composing.

“It’s a superlative list and, on behalf of The Ivors Academy, I’m delighted to congratulate every writer nominated for their craft and achievements.”
