Suryakumar Yadav scored 57 runs off 26 balls, while Cameron Green smashed a stunning 67 off 43 balls. The partnership for the third wicket between the two accounted for 75 runs off just 36 balls. However, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh had other plans.
Given a task to defend 16 runs from the final over, Arshdeep gave away just two runs to bring an end to Mumbai’s three-match unbeaten run. Punjab’s fourth win in six matches has taken them to the fifth spot now.
Here are all the key highlights, stats and moments from the match 31 of the IPL 2023 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).
No ‘proper’ home debut for Archer
Jofra Archer was back in Mumbai’s eleven for the second time in the season. Ahead of the match, Jofra Archer had talked about having a ‘proper home debut’ after leaking 33 runs in his debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) in Bengaluru.
However, that could not be the case as Archer ended up leaking 42 runs this time. The likes of Atharva Taide, Liam Livingstone and Harpreet Singh smashed sixes off the pacer. Sam Curran smashed three boundaries off Archer – two of which came in the penultimate over. Archer dismissed Curran on the last over of the 19th over to pick his maiden wicket for Mumbai Indians.
Curran, Harpreet and Jitesh fire Punjab to 214
Questions have been raised on the Punjab batting unit this season. However, in the absence of their best batter Shikhar Dhawan, the batters tagged together to put up a spirited performance. Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide scored 26 and 29 runs at a strike rate in excess of 150.
Liam Livingstone failed but that did not lead to any collapse as captain Curran (55 off 29) and Harpreet Singh (41 off 28) forged together a 92-run partnership off 50 balls for the fifth wicket. Once they did their job, Jitesh Sharma gave the finishing touch.
The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter smashed 25 runs off just seven balls. He smoked two back-to-back sixes of the final two deliveries of the 18th over from Cameron Green. He then slammed two sixes in the final over from another Aussie pacer Jason Behrendorff.
Mumbai top-order fire again, David plays one ball in final over
Mumbai lost the match but the good news is the top-order again scored in a brisk fashion. Ishan Kishan was dismissed for one off four but that did not restrain Mumbai from attacking. Rohit attacked, Green attacked, Suryakumar attacked and showed he has truly found his lost rhythm by smashing his first fifty of the season.
Tim David scored 25 off 13 including two gigantic sixes. He could very well have won the match for Mumbai but he got to play only one ball in the final over.
Arshdeep’s ‘Burrahhh’ moment
Arshdeep Singh picked four wickets for 29 in the match, broke two stumps on successive deliveries, celebrated his wickets in style and got the ownership of Purple Cap. It felt as if the left-arm pacer was auditioning for an action-packed role in Mumbai.
His two full length deliveries on the third and fourth ball of the final over broke the costly LED stumps and the hearts of thousands of MI fans. In the 18th over, he got rid of Suryakumar Yadav to peg back the momentum in his side’s favour.
Curran got the Man of the Match award, but Arshdeep may have deserved it more.
