Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given already has his passport out ready for a European adventure, but Tim Sherwood was certainly not amused.
Tottenham were thrashed 6-1 by the Magpies on Sunday at St James’ Park, putting a serious dent in their hopes of a top four finish.
Newcastle scored five goals in the space of 21 minutes, a record only better by that of Manchester City, and in doing so, bolster their chances of Champions League football next season.
Jacob Murphy opened then scoring on 61 seconds, before Joelinton made it 2-0, four minutes later.
Murphy then added a third on nine minutes, before Alexander Isak scored twice to make it 5-0 in rapid time.
Callum Wilson then capped off the perfect afternoon for the Toon, as Eddie Howe’s troops ran riot in front of their 53,000 fans.
During punditry duty for Premier League Productions, former Newcastle goalkeeper Given could be seen holding up his passport.
“Is it too early for this?” Given said to presenter Manish Bhasin.
Bhasin replied: “Shay has already got his passport out. He is celebrating after 45 minutes. He is ready for a European adventure with Newcastle United.”
Sherwood, who managed Tottenham during the 2013-14 season, was sat next to the Irishman, and looked a disgruntled figure.
He said: “I am glad I have already done my 90 days in Europe!”, before Bhasin and Given both broke out into laughter.
Newcastle look destined for a place in the top four at the end of the season, with Champions League football expected at St James’ Park.
The Magpies are currently third with 59 points, whilst Spurs are fifth with 53 points, six behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
Newcastle travel to Goodison Park to take on relegation-threatened Everton in their next clash, as Tottenham face Liverpool at Anfield.
