The toss did take place at its scheduled time i.e. 3 PM IST but the cloud cover and slight drizzle just before the start of the match forced the ground staff to cover the entire field.
The match will be delayed due to the overcast conditions as it is drizzling at the moment in Kolkata. The umpires and match officials are present at the venue for inspection even as the winds are blowing at high speed. The floodlights are on at Eden Gardens.
As per Accuweather, there was no chance of precipitation during the game but the skies have once again proven the weathermen wrong. But there had been some short spells of rain in the City of Joy and the highly-anticipated day game on Saturday is going to have a delayed start.
Earlier in the day, GT captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first considering the cloud cover at the venue. After winning the toss, GT skipper Hardik Pandya said, “We will bowl first. Just because of the weather, it was bright when we came and we thought we should bat, but it has changed now.
“I’m pretty happy with where we are, 7 games gone, 7 more to come, we need to play good cricket and qualify for the playoffs. We will learn from the losses as well, but we just need to play some consistent cricket. We are playing the same team.”
After losing the toss, KKR captain Nitish Rana said, “We would have batted first, DLS could come into the equation, but we would still have batted first. There are always areas where we can improve, we have had some forced changes – Jason Roy has a back issue, he’s replaced by Gurbaz. Harshit Rana replaces Umesh Yadav.”
