One person was killed Saturday night in the crash of a single-engine plane near Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles’ Beverly Crest neighborhood, the L.A. Fire Department said.
Fire crews discovered the wreckage and victim, believed to be the plane’s sole occupant, above a home in the 3000 block of Beverly Glen Circle after a search that was hampered by heavy fog, the LAFD said in a statement late Saturday. A search was underway of the steep terrain to confirm that there were no other victims.
The plane was reported missing by an air traffic controller, the LAFD said. Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controllers, the Air Force and the pilot’s cellphone carrier were also involved in the effort to locate the missing aircraft.
The plane was en route from Santa Monica Airport to Van Nuys Airport when it was reported missing earlier in the evening, the LAFD said.
