MANILA, Philippines–Luigi Trillo will now call the shots for Meralco after the team announced significant changes to its coaching staff on Monday.
Trillo became the Bolts’ new coach after Norman Black was given the new role of team consultant after steering the franchise to four PBA Finals appearances during his tenure that started in 2014.
Serbian coach Nenad Vucicic, who initially left but eventually came back last season, will take the role of active consultant.
“We thank Coach Norman for his unwavering commitment and the indelible mark he has left on the organization. We are also grateful to have Coach Nenad and Coach Luigi taking on new roles in leading the Bolts,” said team manager and Luigi’s brother Paolo Trillo.
Trillo had a successful run during a brief period as interim coach in the Philippine Cup after Black mourned the loss of his mother in the United States.
He guided Meralco to the semifinals after a hard-fought series win over Barangay Ginebra in the quarters.
It will be Trillo’s first coaching role since 2013 when he steered Alaska to the Commissioner’s Cup championship.
That feat also gave Trillo the Coach of the Year award by the PBA Press Corps.
