The Yorkshire Vet’s Peter Wright halts filming of Channel 5 series

Channel 5 viewers have been treated to another series of The Yorkshire Vet with animal lovers tuning in to follow the tireless work of Peter Wright, Julian Norton, Matt Jackson-Smith and their colleagues.

They allow cameras to follow their days as they try to help as many animals as possible, from pets to wild animals, with no case ever being the same.

The series has been going on for eight years and whilst many stories have a positive outcome, sometimes there is nothing more the vets can do for the animals.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Peter opened up on the moments when filming would be halted and how he tries to eliminate jeopardy as much as possible.

When asked if the camera crew get in the way of filming, he revealed: “The short answer to that is no. I pretty much ignore them which is what they want and the directors and everyone I work with.

“They are part of the family really and we know each other so well and I know exactly what they want out of the story.

“If we are doing something that is a bit of a struggle, then they do like the jeopardy but I try and reduce jeopardy as much as possible for the sake of the patient and my health as well.

“Stories are dramatic, some pan out exactly the way I want them to with the welfare of the animal being important.

“If it is something that isn’t going to have a happy ending then they shut the cameras down.”

During last week’s episode, Matt Smith headed to Cannon Hall Farm where Rob and Dave Nicholson’s had issues with their latest arrival, a Highland calf.

They were keen and had high hopes as a future show champion, but soon realised there was some issue with his breathing.

Elsewhere, Rohin Aojula took his dad on a call to help a horse that had suffered a nasty injury while out riding

Tonight’s episode will see Peter treat a pet sheep with an unpleasant case of fly strike, resulting in an abundance of maggots living within its ear.

Meanwhile, the Huddersfield team perform complicated spinal surgery on a French bulldog, and Julian Norton is called out to meet a pet pig called Pumba that has hay netting tangled around its teeth.

Last year, Julian touched on the continuing success of the show and how excited he was that they were returning for a 16th season.

In a statement, he said: “The Yorkshire Vet has become a staple viewing for many people since 2015 and reaching series 15 — and still going strong — feels like quite a landmark moment.”

The Yorkshire Vet airs Tuesdays from 8pm on Channel 5.
