The fortunes of one NBA franchise will forever change following Tuesday night’s draft lottery.
Whichever team lands the No. 1 pick will almost certainly select Victor Wembanyama, a towering French prodigy expected to take the league by storm with an unprecedented skill set for a player his size. The hype was already expanding before Adrian Wojnarowski set the bar remarkably high.
“This is the most highly-anticipated player to ever enter the NBA,” Wojnarowski said on ESPN’s NBA Today. “And this is, maybe not only the greatest prospect in the NBA’s history, maybe the greatest prospect in the history of team sports.”

That’s quite the statement given all the prospects who entered the NBA to frenzied fanfare. Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal are only a few of the legends who altered history after going No. 1.
However, many would argue the most hyped prospect — who met and exceeded all expectations — was LeBron James.
Sports Illustrated called a 17-year-old James “the chosen one” during a 2002 cover story. ESPN televised his high-school basketball game.
Decades later, the game’s all-time scoring leader is now vying for his fifth NBA championship.
Some may think Woj’s assessment of Wembanyama is hyperbolic, but there probably hasn’t been as much buzz surrounding an incoming prospect since the Cleveland Cavaliers won the right to draft LeBron 20 years ago.
Fans and teams will hold their breath throughout ESPN’s lottery reveal, beginning at 8 p.m. ET before LeBron’s Los Angeles Lakers start the Western Conference Finals series against the Denver Nuggets.
