After another gun incident involving Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant, many are calling for the league to come down hard. But ESPN’s JJ Redick doesn’t love how the situation is being treated, despite agreeing that some sort of discipline is in order.

I’m not saying there should be no punishment, there should be. There should be consequences. You are the face of the league, you are representing the NBA, you are a role model to young kids, all of that. … Gun culture is pervasive. We’ve got mass shooting after mass shooting and nobody’s doing a damn thing about it. … But there’s no consequence for Greg Abbott telling his constituents they should buy more guns and then we have mass shooting after mass shooting in Texas. … So why are we trying to lay down the hammer on a 23-year-old who didn’t break a law?

The sports world reacted to Redick’s comparison on Twitter.

“Why do we have to pretend like a big part of the heavy punishment isn’t going to be the fact that the commish was lied to and feels embarrassed?” a fan asked. “This happens in sports all the time. If you lie to the commish, the punishment explodes.”

“I respect JJ’s point here. But mostly, my overarching reaction is that this says more about our politicians than the NBA or Morant,” commented Stephen Holder. “SMH.”

“JJ is absolutely correct. But dammit 12. Everything doesn’t have to be broadcast on IG Live. Most of us (ur fans) are disappointed bc you said that u would make better decisions going forward. U said that. Having a gun definitely is not illegal but my God man… be smarter,” another replied.

“He’s got a point. Elected officials aren’t being held accountable so why is Ja BUT no matter who it is, just because someone does something dumb the standard in society can’t be ‘well if he does it, why can’t I.'”

As of Wednesday there have been 226 mass shootings in the United States this year.
