Johnny Depp might have been all smiles as he walked the red carpet at the 76th Cannes Film Festival for the opening-night premiere of Jeanne du Barry, but all fans could talk about on social media were doctored pics of his teeth.

“Johnny Depp’s teeth are literally ROTTING,” one fan wrote sharing a close-up of the smiling actor.

“Seeing that pic of Johnny Depp’s teeth on my [timeline] just ruined my mood. That’s enough Twitter for me,” another seconded.
“I wish the Johnny Depp teeth discourse would stop because if I see another picture of his mouth on my [timeline], edited or not, I will throw up,” a third person pleaded.

“Very, very, very inspired to brush my teeth, floss and use a tongue scraper every time I see a pic of Johnny Depp at Cannes,” another added.
A fifth person tried to take a swipe at the lukewarm critical response to Jeanne du Barry writing, “Johnny Depp’s new movie, #JeanneDuBarry, debuts with a Metacritic score of 51, an F rating. The score is currently as yellow as his teeth. Congratulations!”

But Twitter was quick to cast doubt on the veracity of the photos circulating online, adding a link to the original Getty image and an advisory saying, “This photo has been altered to make Johnny Depp’s teeth appear orange and rotting.”

Twitter’s clarification then pitted Depp fans against those who still support his ex-wife Amber Heard, who the Oscar nominee successfully sued for defamation last year.
“Do Amber Heard fans really have nothing better to do than Photoshop rotten teeth onto Johnny Depp. Get jobs! Get hobbies,” one person dismissed.
Depp’s reappearance at Cannes marked a triumphant return for the embattled actor after Heard’s accusations of abuse led to him being shunned by the film industry and dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
The French-language Jeanne du Barry, in which Depp plays King Louis XV, is his first role since a Virginia jury awarded him $10.35 million in his legal battle with Heard.
Following the film’s screening, Depp held back tears as he was feted with a seven-minute standing ovation.

Later, at a press conference with the film’s director and star Maiwenn, Depp admitted he was hurt that his industry colleagues were quick to turn their back on him after Heard’s allegations.
“Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? Well, you’d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point like this was all just a weird joke,” he said during a press conference to promote Jeanne du Barry, per Variety.
“Of course, when you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something that’s merely a bunch of vowels and consonants floating in the air.”
But he added that he wasn’t interested in trying to regain the A-list stardom that he achieved in the early 2000s thanks to his leading role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, telling reporters he has no “need for Hollywood.”
“Do I feel boycotted now? No, not at all. But I don’t feel boycotted because I don’t think about Hollywood,” he said. “I don’t feel much further need for Hollywood — I don’t know about you.”
