LSG require a victory to ensure their participation in the playoffs this season. A defeat can jeopardize their playoff hopes and can even eliminate them. As LSG prepare for the crucial tie against KKR, LSG bowling coach Morne Morkel believes they hold a certain advantage despite being the away side.
Gautam Gambhir is the LSG mentor since their inception last season. Gambhir was part of the KKR setup for seven years and tasted numerous successes with them. KKR’s two IPL titles have come under Gambhir’s captaincy and the LSG mentor also knows the Eden extensively.
And Morkel reckons having Gambhir in their think tank will definitely be advantageous for them.
“Gambhir is always an advantage for us. He played for KKR, he knows Eden Gardens, and he was the two-time champion captain. So, I think it’s an advantage, and hopefully, we could make it,” Morkel said.
Morkel also emphasized their main aim is to play the final. If LSG qualify for playoffs, it will be back-to-back IPL Playoff qualifications in their first two seasons, same as the other new franchise Gujarat Titans.
“We need to do is to play and win. So, qualify is one thing. But playing final is the goal. Kolkata, Eden gardens is always a high-scoring ground. This ground has a history. So hopefully we could make it,” Morkel added.
The former South Africa pacer was also asked about LSG’s stand-in skipper Krunal Pandya, who took over the captaincy duties following KL Rahul’s injury. And Morkel heaped praises on Pandya’s excellent leadership skills and lauded his contribution to the team.
“He is exceptional. He is a strong leader, leading from the front. Captain went to bowl during tough situations. He is having a crucial role,” the LSG bowling coach concluded.
