Leeds are reportedly hatching a plan to tempt former Leicester and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to Elland Road should the club be relegated from the Premier League this weekend. The Whites are second from bottom in the top-flight table and are two points adrift of 17th-placed Everton ahead of the final round of matches on Sunday.
Leeds have suffered a woeful season this time around and have only won seven of their 37 matches. The Yorkshire giants have had three managers throughout the campaign, with ex-England boss Sam Allardyce appointed on a short-term deal earlier this month following the departure of Javi Gracia, who himself only took over from Jesse Marsch in February.
But Premier League survival is now out of their hands ahead of their season finale against Tottenham. Leeds will drop into the Championship if Everton beat Bournemouth on Sunday, while a draw for the Toffees or a win for 18th-place Leicester against West Ham could also condemn the Whites to the second tier.
According to The Athletic, there is no provision for Allardyce to remain as head coach beyond the end of the season. And should the club suffer relegation, Rodgers is likely to come into the equation in Leeds’ hunt for a new manager.
Rodgers almost led Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 2014 following an outstanding season for the Anfield side – but the Reds were ultimately beaten to top spot by Manchester City. The 50-year-old spent over three years on Merseyside before leading Celtic to back-to-back domestic trebles including two Scottish Premiership titles.
He then became manager of Leicester in February 2019 and guided the team to FA Cup glory in 2021 as well as back-to-back fifth-placed finishes, although he was criticised for not achieving a top-four finish. But the Northern Irishman was dismissed by the Foxes at the start of last month following a dismal season for the east Midlands club.
Rodgers has pedigree in the Championship, having led Swansea into the Premier League via the play-offs in 2011. But Leeds could face a battle to convince the former defender to manage in the second tier once again.
If the Elland Road outfit were to somehow retain their place in the Premier League, they will reportedly instead try to engage with someone like Graham Potter, who excelled during his time in charge of Brighton. The 48-year-old spent three seasons in Sussex and led the Seagulls to a ninth-place league finish last time around.
Potter left the club last September to take over from Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea but was sacked by the Blues seven months later following a dismal run of form from the west London giants.
