Mumbai Indians won the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants in an emphatic style to confirm their berth against GT. Despite a poor start, MI have played out of their skin in the last few matches and managed a playoff berth.
Players like Suryakumar Yadav, Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla have been excellent for them, whereas youngsters such as Nehal Wadhera, Akash Madhwal have been excellent for them as well. And the experts have hailed Rohit Sharma for his captaincy.
The Mumbai Indians captain has struggled with batting this season, but that hasn’t impacted on his captaincy skills. Sharma has marshalled his troops in an inspiring fashion and has managed to extract the optimum out of the so-called inexperienced players of the squad.
And former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan hailed the MI skipper for that. Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Irfan praised Rohit Sharma’s ‘astute captaincy’ despite injury setbacks.
“Rohit Sharma has delivered once again for Mumbai Indians. He was faced with a crisis at the start of the competition when key pacer Jasprit Bumrah was out. Jofra Archer struggled with his form and fitness but this captain marshalled his troops well. He first guided MI to the eliminator and then took his team to the qualifiers with his astute captaincy,” Pathan said.
Mumbai’s bowling attack was significantly weakened with the absences of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. The former was ruled out for the entirety of the IPL season, whereas England international Jofra Archer played only 5 games before suffering another costly injury which will keep him sidelined for a considerable time again.
Amid the adversities, MI’s youngsters like Akash Madhwal, Arshad Khan have stepped up. Madhwal has already picked up 13 wickets this season and five of them came against LSG in the eliminator. Former India and MI player Harbhajan Singh has credit MI captain Rohit Sharma for instilling confidence in youngsters and says his approachability has made him a successful captain.
“Rohit Sharma is a very chilled-out captain. He is a very approachable captain even for the youngsters. He never carries that ego and youngsters can reach out to him anytime,” Harbhajan said on Star Sports Cricket Live.
“He loves spending time with uncapped players. He’s someone who hasn’t taken success to his head, he’s very humble and shows a lot of respect to the senior players. This humility makes Rohit a great player,” Harbhajan added.
