Queen Camilla visited the island of Ischia, in Italy, for the first time when she was a little girl and used to spend her family holidays in the stunning Mediterranean spot.

It is believed she also travelled there with her children Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes and with her husband King Charles.

Talking about her childhood memories, Camilla once said the island “instilled a lifelong passion for Italian food”.

How to get to Ischia

The island of Ischia is located in the Gulf of Naples, in the Mediterranean. Getting there is very affordable with flights from London to Naples from £27 with Ryanair in June 2023.

From Naples, holidaymakers will have to take a ferry to Ischia which takes approximately one hour, and renting a car is recommended if travellers want to move around and visit the most famous spots.

Tourists could spend the day in Naples before heading to Ischia as the southern Italian city, where the renowned pizza Margherita was born, is definitely worth a visit.

Ischia is a very popular summer destination among Italians and many movies have been filmed there, including The Talented Mr Ripley, starring Jude Law and Matt Damon.

What to see in Ischia

Ischia is a beautiful island with picturesque little towns and beautiful beaches with turquoise waters.

The Italian spot is perfect for a relaxing summer holiday but there are also many things to do, historical sights and restaurants to enjoy delicious seafood, pasta and pizza.

Some of the most popular attractions are Castello Aragonese d’Ischia, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and the Thermal Springs.

Holidaymakers can also take the ferry to the colourful island of Procida, and the journey takes only around 20 minutes.

Taking a day trip to Capri is a great option, and tourists can also visit Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

On Tripadvisor, Larisa, who recently visited Ischia, explained that the island is “an amazing place” with “great beautiful views” of the castle.

One of the prettiest beaches in Ischia is Maronti Beach described by visitors as a “marvellous” beach with “crystal clear” waters.

Chief customer officer at On the Beach, Zoe Harris, commented: “The location, the views, the sheer beauty of the island that is fit for a Queen has been driving bookings up dramatically in the past few weeks.

“But the crowning glory has to be the price – which won’t cost a King’s ransom. We anticipate that Ischia will continue to rise up the ranks as a British holiday favourite in the next few years, particularly given it’s a firm favourite with our Queen.”
