Iconic Motorola Razr phone is back with big upgrades Samsung can’t match

Samsung might rule the roost when it comes to foldable smartphones but the competition is fighting back. Oppo recently uncovered its striking new N2 Flip and now Motorola is returning with a massive update to its iconic Razr range of devices. Those who owned a phone back in 2004 will be well aware of these groundbreaking call makers which took the world by storm thanks to their power and ultra-slimline design.

The latest addition to the range, called the Razr 40 Ultra, certainly takes things to a whole new level with this device featuring the biggest cover screen yet on a flippable.

In fact, Motorola is boasting that its new device includes a 3.6-inch external display – that’s compared to a measly 1.9-inch screen on Samsung Z Flip 4.

It’s so big it takes up almost the whole front panel with the design team even punching the cameras through the screen to make sure it fills as much room as possible.

From this cover display, users can make calls, check emails and reply to texts without flipping things open. But that’s not all as there’s also the option to customise the look via wallpapers and unique clocks plus access popular apps such as Spotify, Google Maps, Netflix and Gmail.

It basically means you can use the cover display just like a normal phone – that’s a first for a flip device.

It even gets a speedy 144Hz refresh rate to make scrolling feel silky smooth and all that extra space should hopefully improve the usability of these cover screens.

Along with that bigger front display, another bonus of owning this device is its size with Motorola also promising that, once folded, it’s now the slimmest on the market. Flip things open and a huge 6.9-inch screen is revealed which features an adaptive 165Hz refresh rate to help improve battery life.

There’s also clever Flex View technology means it can be opened at any angle allowing users to stand it on their desk and make hands-free video calls or snap photos without needing to physically hold the device.

Motorola is also boasting that its hinge reduces the crease in the screen and is tough enough to withstand years of punishment.

Head under the hood and the phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. There’s also a 3800mAh battery and enhanced audio thanks to Spatial Sound and Dolby Atmos

Like all new smartphones, there’s an impressive dual-lens rear camera system which can snap images in low light and also capture close-up and wide-angle photos.

Other bonus features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 5G and the battery can be refilled wirelessly. Unlike Samsung, Motorola also ships a 30W fast charger in the box so there’s no need to splash out on additional accessories.

Sadly, all this tech doesn’t come cheap with the Razr 40 Ultra costing a rather hefty £1,049. Ouch!

If that sounds a bit rich then the firm is also releasing a cheaper version simply called the Razr 40.

This device gets a much smaller cover screen and less powerful processor but it does get the same design, impressive cameras and long battery life. Fans can grab this device for just £799.99 when it launches in the coming months.
