Never Have I Ever season 5 isn’t happening for an important reason

Season 4 of Netflix favourite Never Have I Ever is confirmed as the final bow from the show. While the last season of the hit comedy series is set to be released on June 8, fans might be reeling about the fact they won’t get another fix after. But the show’s creator Mindy Kaling has explained the reason behind Never Have I Ever season 5 not being on the cards — and we get it.

The show centres on Devi (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) an Indian-American high schooler navigating guys, grades and family disputes. In the new series, Devi is in her final year of school before college, with hopes of going to prestigious Princeton University, while juggling a love triangle with Ben (Jaren Levison) and Paxton (Darren Barnet), which looks like it’s set to become a square, as a new love interest named Ethan is on the scene. We definitely recommend Googling Michael Cimino, the actor who plays him, after you read this.

Here’s why Never Have I Ever is ending at season 4

So why can’t the show follow her to college for a Never Have I Ever season 5?

Explaining the decision to Entertainment Tonight, creator Mindy said: “Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense. They can’t be in high school forever. We’ve seen those shows. Like, you’ve been in high school for 12 years. What is going on here? Also, the actors get older and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old.”

She has a point — and we love the authenticity of this show. Even if Paxton is played by 32-year-old Darren. Ahem.

On the decision to end Never Have I Ever, Mindy added: “Some things are built-in doing a high school show that felt like, OK, this is time. But the truth is, we got to know the characters.”
