Tesla will allow General Motors’ electric vehicles to recharge at any of its 12,000 Supercharger stations across North America, starting in 2024, as part of a new agreement announced by GM on June 8. Detroit-based General Motors also said it will build Tesla’s preferred North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors into its EVs beginning in 2025.

Owners of GM EVs without the NACS connector built in will require an adapter to connect to chargers in Tesla’s network, said the automaker; once GM transitions to NACS ports, owners will instead need adapters, provided by GM, to charge at stations using the conventional Combined Charging System (CCS).

“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points, while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” wrote General Motors CEO Mary Barra in a statement. “This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers. Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”

The announcement parallels one made by Ford last month, which revealed that automaker will also allow owners of its EVs to use adapters to access Tesla Superchargers. Ford will similarly pivot from Combined Charging System ports to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard port in 2025.

Tesla’s fast-charging network is generally considered to be North America’s largest and most reliable.
