SHANGHAI, 14th June, 2023 (WAM) — The Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai has independently carried out the first kidney transplant operation for a kid last week.
According to ShanghaiEye, the hospital was the the first medical facility in Shanghai to obtain the medical qualification for pediatric transplantation.
After more than half a year of preparations, the hospital successfully carried out the surgery.
The hospital announced that the child patient’s 60-year-old grandmother, who donated kidney, has been discharged from the hospital, and the child himself is also recovering well.
Xiao Ding, a 14-year-old patient, held his grandma’s hand and told her to take good care of herself repeatedly. Last Tuesday, Xiao Ding underwent a kidney transplant operation, and the new kidney came from his grandma who had raised him all these years.
Xiao Ding was diagnosed with kidney problems four years ago. Xiao Ding’s condition worsened recently, and doctors decided that only dialysis or a kidney transplant could save his life. The medical team finally chose a treatment plan that involved Xiao Ding’s grandma as the donor of the kidney.
Liu Feng, Director of the Kidney Transplantation Department of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, said that when an organ from an elderly person is transplanted to a younger or infant patient, the organ will adapt to the patient’s physiological condition.
