LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but he’s done a lot to cement his legacy off the court as well.
James opened the I Promise school in 2018 in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The school serves as a safe place for underprivileged youth in the area, and teaches students in grades three through five with aspirations to move to grades one through eight.
LeBron is taking I Promise to a new level with his latest venture in the area.

James opened an affordable housing complex in Akron for families. It features 50 apartments, all with modern amenities.
The building features two, three and four bedroom apartments with wi-fi, community and fitness rooms. Some of the units in the building have been designed for families with mobility and sensory needs.
“Young people who have a quality place to live are better students and become better citizens in our community,” said Dan DeVille, Vice Chair of the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation, where the development is located.
“We want to put our arms around the community and help however we can, trying to fill in the gaps and be the glue that binds things together,” said Willie McGee, LeBron’s friend and high school teammate who works as the LeBron James’ Family Foundation’s We Are Family coach.
“They have somewhere where you can call home that’s safe, that you can get a good hot meal and have a good rest at the end of the night—it’s really what they try to provide here, and I think they hit the mark.”
