Not all of the stars of Gundogan’s team actually shone in the Premier League, but if they didn’t show their best on these shores, they returned to Germany to make the most of their talents.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham players of the Premier League era made the cut for Gundogan, who also put his own name on the team sheet in a loose 3-4-3 formation..
‘Jens Lehmann is the goalkeeper that I have picked,’ Gundogan told the Manchester City website.
‘Then I have a back three of Antonio Rudiger, that I play with in the German team right now. Someone who I also admire a lot, Per Mertesacker, also a really good defender in my point of view, someone who played years in the German national team and then also for Arsenal.
‘And Jerome Boateng, I have picked. Someone that I’ve played in the national team with. He is someone who has great abilities and he is a really good player.
‘In midfield I have four players, for two kind of holding midfielders with Emre Can and Michael Ballack. Emre of course I know him myself. We’re very close, a friend of mine who played really well at his time for Liverpool.
‘Ahead of those two, I have gone for myself and Mesut Ozil.
‘He was an unbelievable talent, his ball handling was impressive. I had the privilege to have played with him in the national team. A good friend of mine as well and yeah, an unbelievable player.
‘Left wing, Leroy [Sane] I don’t know if you guys remember him!
‘Striker, Jurgen Klinsmann, he’s a legend in Germany but I’m a little bit too young to remember everything of him playing.
‘I remember him in the German national team shirt, scoring a few goals but apart from that I don’t know much, but of course he was a great player.
‘Right winger, Serge Gnabry I don’t thin he played much in the Premier League but the developments he had in the last, I would say maybe three or four years at Bayern Munich is quite impressive.’
