With few hours of oxygen left in the missing Titan submersible, rescue efforts continue of the five passengers who have been trapped inside since it submerged Sunday morning. Here’s a close-up look at the Titan:
- Pilot: The sub is steered using a modified video game controller that costs about $40.
- Hull: Is 5 inches thick made of carbon fiber, allowing it to withstand high pressures at the wreck of the Titanic.
- Electric thrusters: Two horizontal and two vertical thrusters allow it to travel at speeds of up to 3.45 mph.
- Weights: Allow the Titan to sink 2.4 miles below sea level.
- Toilet: Is located at the front separated from the rest of the crew by a thin curtain.
- Viewport: Is 21 inches of thick glass.
- Titanium cap: Is bolted on the hull before the expedition, sealing the passengers inside until they return to the surface.
